I checked the slide, im in the prosess of cleaning out the carb and doing a valve clearance adjustment at the moment, how knows maybie that was the problem, but i did not hear any ticking. i pulled the timing chain adjuster out and checked the operation, nothing seems to be ... It sometimes helps to remove the spark plugs to make the crank easier to move. The cam pulleys can be tricky as sometimes they like to move on you due to spring tension on the camshaft.

When your two timing marks are pointing both together in the middle (cam dot is down, crank dot is on top) this does in fact put the timing 180 degrees out and should have the number 6 sparkplug wire running to it on the distributor.

Probly cracked a plug installing the engine, landed a wire wrong, or inadvertently rotated the distributor. Time it, and then put your light on all the wires to see if all fire. Tim Smith.
